Acid Reflux Cure
You might think that a small
case of heartburn is nothing to be too concerned about, and in some situations, this is true. However, heartburn can be the forerunner of another more serious condition known as acid reflux.
Acid reflux affects nearly 20% of the adult population and occurs when fluids from the stomach travel back into the esophagus. When this happens, the acids from your stomach can cause a burning sensation that can become quite painful. Left untreated this disorder can cause
serious medical complications.
The acid, pepsins and bile all can and will cause damage to the esophagus if the condition persists untreated, and unfortunately once it begins it is a
lifelong problem therefore treatment is a long term commitment as well.
Prevention
Perhaps the best acid reflux “cure” is to avoid the substances that make it worse. There are many different causes of acid reflux including pregnancy, weight gain and smoking however certain foods are common triggers. If you find that, you are suffering from
frequent heartburn you might want to consider limiting some of the trigger foods and drinks.
- Coffee
- Carbonated drinks
- Highly acidic foods like tomatoes
- Chocolate
- Peppermint
- Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli
- High fat foods
- Smoking
Reducing or eliminating, as many of the above contributors will go a long way toward an
acid reflux cure. For extreme cases that are not curtailed by a change in lifestyle or diet medications may be required.
Medication
If you are a frequent sufferer of intense heartburn or acid reflux, you may want something a bit stronger to
treat your symptoms. Many times acid reflux is a result of over active proton pumps. These pumps are responsible for acid that is produced in your stomach and when they go into overdrive, you can experience acid reflux.
While medications are not technically an
acid reflux cure, they can decrease the incidences and protect your esophagus from damage.
Medications that you can be prescribed include but are not limited to:
- omeprazole
- pantoprazole
- lansoprazole
- Antacids
- Gaviscon
Alternative Treatments
Many people are not comfortable with the idea of taking medications long term in order to affect an
acid reflux cure. This has inspired many alternative medicine treatments to become available. The most common acid reflux cure you will find advertised today is the use of apple cider vinegar.
It may seem counterintuitive to add an acid based substance to a problem with acid reflux, but there are those who swear by its effectiveness. It is important to note that the Food and Drug Administration have not evaluated these claims so you use them at your own risk.
Another
alternative treatment includes improving your posture. Since slouching prevents a direct path from the stomach to the esophagus the muscle around the latter can go into a spasm. Gas and acid become trapped in the spasm causing coughing and other asthma like symptoms.
