When a diet is just not the answer, this procedure can provide the help that other plans and method can't.  This surgery is more effective for some patients who are not the ideal candidate for a gastric bypass surgery for a variety of reasons.

The size of the stomach in a gastric sleeve procedure is cut off by as much as eighty five percent.  This leaves the stomach greatly reduced which can aid in weight loss.  During the procedure, the doctor will remove a large portion of the stomach leaving behind a much smaller stomach which resembles a sleeve.

This is where the name of the procedure comes from.  The openings are left intact for the stomach which is very different than a gastric bypass surgery.

This procedure is seen as a safer surgery than a gastric bypass for patients who have numerous health issues.  A gastric sleeve procedure is also more effective because of the removal of the part of the stomach that is controlling hunger.  Digestion is left to work in the same manner as before the surgery so there is a much less radical approach to the weight loss surgery.

Of course, there is risk associated with the gastric sleeve procedure.  Like any surgery or any time that you undergo anesthesia there is a risk involved.  Patients who have undergone the surgery are at a higher risk of infection, blood clots and slower healing if they smoke after the procedure.  It may also be necessary for patients to have an additional surgery later to lose all of the weight that is needed.

After a gastric bypass and the gastric sleeve surgery there is always the possibility of the smaller portion of stomach stretching.  This is why it is important that patients learn better eating habits after the surgery.  The eating habits that were in place before the surgery may cause nausea or discomfort after the surgery has been completed.  This may be the catalyst for learning better eating habits.

Patients who have a gastric sleeve procedure and successfully lose weight will not be able to sustain their weight loss if good eating habits are not maintained.  The point of any surgery for weight loss is to aid the patient lose the weight and begin to realize the health benefits of weight loss.

There is a great amount of work that must be accomplished to ensure that the weight loss is maintained and that good eating habits are developed for the long term results to be realized.  If you are considering this procedure, you should make sure that you have a good nutritional plan in place to gain the full benefits of losing weight.
