The Advantages Of Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

Laparoscopic hysterectomy is the alternative to the traditional abdominal hysterectomy.  This alternative has a number of advantages over the traditional method of a hysterectomy surgery which include a faster time for the surgery, a speedier recovery and it is a less invasive surgery. These benefits have made the surgery the ideal way for patients to have a necessary hysterectomy without suffering from some of the difficult recovery problems that are accompanied by the traditional approach.

To better understand what the advantages are of a laparoscopic hysterectomy you should understand what a hysterectomy is and why it is needed in some cases.  The hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the woman's uterus. There is some controversy over the reasons to perform the surgery and some doctors believe that it is only necessary for the treatment of cancer.  Other doctors believe that this approach leaves out a number of women who are not suffering from cancer but are facing extreme pain and bleeding that is caused by uterine problems.

A woman who is recommended for a laparoscopic hysterectomy should make sure that she gets a second opinion before the surgery is performed. It is important to find out if there are other treatment options and what those options might be.  Some women respond to medications for the treatment of their uterine problems while others may not.

A laparoscopic hysterectomy will allow the doctor to detach the uterus from inside the body while the doctor is using laparoscopic instruments and viewing the uterus from cameras on the end of the instruments. The incisions are much smaller than with an abdominal hysterectomy and the pain is considered to be much less.  The recovery time for this surgery is also much lower than a traditional abdominal hysterectomy.

For this type of surgery, it is only necessary in most cases to stay in the hospital for one day and normal activities can be resumed after only a couple of weeks.  This is a considerable difference from an abdominal hysterectomy.

A  laparoscopic hysterectomy  is a serious operation and it is necessary for the patient to fully understand the reasons for it and the extent of the operation.  Some hysterectomy surgeries will remove the uterus and the cervix and is called a total hysterectomy. A subtotal hysterectomy will only remove the upper portion of the uterus.  Understanding the difference is an important consideration for the type of surgery that is required.

If your doctor is recommending a hysterectomy because of problems that you have been having, you should make sure that you schedule a second opinion.  Find out what your options are and whether medications can be tried first.  A surgery is not necessarily the only answer to your problem. If there are other treatment options available, discuss them with your doctor to find out the pros and cons of each of your options.  When a hysterectomy is planned, find out whether an abdominal, vaginal or laparoscopic hysterectomy is planned.
