Vaginal Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy involves an operation that will totally remove the womb or uterus as it is known medically.  The uterus is the location where a baby grows within a woman’s belly when she is pregnant. The fallopian tubes and the ovaries are sometimes removed as well.

Fallopian tubes gently carry eggs from the ovaries into the uterus, and the ovaries are of course, the organs that produce eggs. Ovaries also produce hormones, which a woman may no longer have a use for.

In a regular abdominal hysterectomy the surgeon makes an incision to remove the womb and also the tubes and eggs if necessary, but in a vaginal hysterectomy the natural opening of the vagina is used to access the womb as well as the tubes and eggs and then the various cut away tissues are removed. It is all done through the vaginal opening.

A normal hysterectomy will leave scarring on the stomach, which prevents many women from agreeing to have a hysterectomy.  Either they fear that the scar will somehow be too obvious in a bikini, or they do not wish to have sex with their partner if their partner will be subject to the scars.

With a vaginal hysterectomy the vagina is held open for the surgeon by various special instruments.  In this manner there are no external incisions made.  All incisions are made at the top of the vagina surrounding the cervix.

The surgeon then cuts the uterus and the cervix away from its supporting tissues and ligaments and the blood vessels are then tied off.  Both uterus and cervix can then be pulled out from the vagina. Following this the vagina will be closed to prevent infections from setting in and also to keep the intestines from sinking into the newly formed space.

The vaginal hysterectomy method is quite superior to the abdominal procedure in that it is much easier to recover from. Although the abdominal procedure does not make that big an incision, it is there nonetheless, and has to be dealt with.

Also, abdominal hysterectomies are rather painful to recover from, whereas the vaginal hysterectomy is much less painful.  Rather than spending days recovering in the hospital those who are recovering from vaginal hysterectomies frequently leave the hospital within 12 hours of the surgery!

It also might be mentioned here that the cost of an abdominal surgery is substantially higher than the cost of a vaginal hysterectomy. If your surgeon suggests a vaginal hysterectomy after checking you carefully, there’s a good chance that it will make the insurance company more compliant to cover the cost. The various reasons why a hysterectomy may be recommended are:
